Bowlway Lanes opened in 1941. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the business was temporarily closed in March, as all other non-essential businesses, but never re-opened. The property was later sold in September of 2020. The three Grocke bothers owned and operated the business for more than 30 years.
In addition to both league and open bowling, Bowlway hosted special tournaments including the No-Tap Turkey Tournament on Thanksgiving Day and the New Year's Eve No-Tap Tournament.
Bowlway offered a full service Pro Shop, snack bar, full service bar and video gaming. The building was used for fund-raising events, karaoke in the bar once a week during the league season, and private party functions such as birthday parties and anniversary celebrations.
Many Elgin-area residents "grew up" at Bowlway, participating in the youth league, traveling and school leagues, and adult sanctioned league bowling. And, quite a few happily married couples met their spouses while enjoying the sport, libations, singing, and friendly gatherings at Bowlway.
